Darren Gergle (Ph.D., Carnegie Mellon University) is the director of the CollaboLab and is a faculty member in the Communication Studies and Electrical Engineering & Computer Science departments at Northwestern University. He is an affiliate of the Center for Technology and Social Behavior and also directs the Mobile Tracking Laboratory.
Darren is broadly interested in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC). His research program focuses on developing a theoretical understanding of the role that technology plays in supporting group interaction, and using this theoretical understanding, in turn, to develop innovative technologies to support group interaction.

Emilee Rader

Emilee Rader (Ph.D, University of Michigan) is a post-doctoral fellow in the Center for Technology and Social Behavior, and joined the lab in 2009. She earned a Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University, and spent five years working with an interdisciplinary team of researchers at Motorola Labs, before completing the doctoral program in the School of Information at Michigan. Her current work reflects her interests in information organization, sharing, and reuse; technology-mediated communication; knowledge management; and the psychology of language.

Patti (BA, University of California, Berkeley) is a Ph.D. student in the Technology & Social Behavior program. She completed her custom undergraduate degree on information technology for society, and joined the lab in Fall 2007. She is interested in group interactions, the perception of visual information, and the use of visualization in social computing.

He completed his undergraduate degree in Communication and has been working in the lab since the summer of 2008. He is interested in telepresence and cooperation in shared virtual spaces, and has also been developing tools to study how people adapt language processes.

Brent Hecht

Brent (BA, Macalester College; MA, University of California, Santa Barbara) is a Ph.D. student in Computer Science. He recently completed his Masters in Geography. He is expanding beyond all that is spatial, although he still interested in the analogies that space can provide. His main fascinations currently include information retrieval, natural language processing, data exploration, and information visualization. When not being an academe, Brent enjoys country music, traveling, and learning random things about the world.

Brian (BS, Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is a Ph.D. student in the Media, Technology & Society program. He completed his undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Science and Technology Studies, and joined the lab in 2007. His current research interests are in group dynamics and organizational processes in computer-mediated collaborative communities. He uses methods in social network analysis and agent-based modeling to understand decision-making, consensus-formation, gate-keeping, and other social influence phenomena in environments like Wikipedia and MMOGS.

Her primary research interest is the influence of social factors in language acquisition. In the labs, she works on a variety of linguistics-related projects. Outside of research, she enjoys traveling, running, and supporting her favorite local Chicago actor.
