Darren Gergle

Darren Gergle (Ph.D., Carnegie Mellon University) is the director of the CollaboLab and is a faculty member in the Department of Communication Studies in the School of Communication at Northwestern University. He also hold an appointment in the Department of EECS and is an affiliate of the Center for Technology and Social Behavior. He also directs Northwestern University's Mobile Tracking Laboratory.
He is broadly interested in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC). His research program focuses on developing a theoretical understanding of the role that technology plays in supporting group interaction, and using this theoretical understanding, in turn, to develop innovative technologies to support group interaction.

Alastair Gill (Ph.D., University of Edinburgh) is a post-doctoral fellow in the Center for Technology and Social Behavior. Prior to his arrival at NU, he was a Faber Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Laboratoire d'Etude de l'Apprentissage et du Développement (C.N.R.S), University of Burgundy, France. He received his Ph.D. in Informatics from the University of Edinburgh in 2004. His interests are in the social and psychological aspects of communication, especially with reference to computer-mediated technologies which minimize the availability of interpersonal cues. His research focuses on the application of data-intensive techniques to the study of these interpersonal language phenomena.

She recently completed her undergraduate degree in Information Technology for Society, and joined the lab in the Fall of 2007. She is interested in interaction design and using visualization in the study of collaborative computing environments.

Chris Karr

Chris (BA, Princeton) is a Ph.D. student in the Media, Technology, and Society program. He received his undergraduate degree in Computer Science, and has been working in the lab since Spring of 2007. His primary research interest is ubiquitous computing, with a focus on designing and creating more humane interfaces for daily life. He is also an open-source software developer and regularly writes code for a variety of projects.

Brian Keegan

Brian (BS, Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is a Ph.D. student in the Media, Technology & Society program. He recently completed his undergraduate degree in Science and Technology Studies and joined the lab in the Fall of 2007. He is broadly interested in how authority and deviant identities are constructed and become legitimized or contested within online collaborative spaces. His current research aims to use network analysis to study a variety of behaviors in large-scale collaborative spaces including gold farming in WoW, "open-source journalism" in wikipedia, wiki-tools to collaboratively draft and debate legislation, or other examples of communities dependent upon and embedded within computer-mediated communication systems.

Lauren (BA, Northwestern University) is a Ph.D. student in the Media, Technology & Society program. She recently completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Sociology, and joined the lab in the Fall of 2007. She spent the summer of 2007 working on the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Her primary research interest is in understanding the role computer-mediated communication technologies play in interpersonal relationships.

Kathleen Geraghty (MSc, University of Edinburgh) recently completed her Masters degree in Developmental Lingistics. She is excited to work with and learn from the many talented and tech-savvy researchers in the CollaboLab. Her research interests include the influence of social factors in language acquisition. Outside of work she enjoys running, coooking, theatre, and exploring the endless number of eateries in Chicago.

Jason Bornstein

Jason Bornstein is a junior Communication Studies major and Business Institutions Minor at Northwestern University. Prior to CollaboLab, Jason played an active role in two student publications, The Daily Northwestern and North by Northwestern. He is excited about the academic opportunities CollaboLab presents and believes his knowledge and background in media and communication makes him a good fit for the project. As a research assistant, Jason will focus on a variety of topics including how shared visual information influences language use.

Sherry Lin is an undergraduate Communication Studies and International Studies double major at Northwestern University. Currently, she works on data from various studies aimed at understanding language and communication. Aside from the Collabolab, she is part of the Club Rugby team on campus and a member of the Women's Chorus. In her free time, she enjoys sleeping excessively, travelling, theater, and movies.

Alex Markov

Alex Markov graduated in 2008 from Northwestern's School of Communication with a BA in Communication Studies. This fall he will be heeding the immortal words of the not so immortal John Soule ("Go West, young man, and grow up with the country" - a line made famous by New York Tribune publisher Horace Greeley) and moving to California to begin a PhD program at the University of California-Santa Barbara. His research interests include how interpersonal processes like persuasion or negotiation occur online, the transformation and fragmentation of identity online, and health communication. Hobbies include video gaming, sleeping, and Scrabble.

Linnea Perelli-Minetti is a junior at Northwestern where she is majoring in history and political science. Originally from Greenwich, CT, she is active on campus as the Reference Chair for Kappa Alpha Theta and the Vice President Publicity of the College Republicans, among other organizations. Jason Sandler is a Junior in the Weinberg School of Arts and Sciences and is creating a custom Anthropology major focused on Human-Computer Interaction. He is also an Economics minor. Jason enjoys ice skating at Millennium Park, Chinese delivery, Norris mini courses, reheated Chinese delivery, anything Blu-ray, and all racket sports.
