Self

My name is Patti Bao and I am a Ph.D. student in the Technology & Social Behavior joint Ph.D. program at Northwestern University. I work with Darren Gergle in the CollaboLab and am interested in visual information and distributed collaboration.

Currently

My research focuses on how even subtle differences in technological factors, such as display size, can affect how people perceive and interact with visual information. I hope to use the findings of this work to inform the design of interfaces across multiple devices. I am also interested in how information visualization can be used to support computer-mediated collaboration.

Previously

I hold a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from UC Berkeley where I created my own major on designing information technology for society. As an undergraduate, I worked with Ken Goldberg in the Automation Lab where I helped to design and develop a collaborative interface for a massively multiplayer online birdwatching game. I also helped Nancy Van House to conduct fieldwork on people's use of Flickr and cameraphones. Some of my previous work can be found here.
